Today we worked a couple of submissions from knee in the belly. The first was an armbar:
1. Start with knee in the belly, both hands gripping opp’s collar
2. Opp starts to push on your knee and turns toward you
3. Slide your near hand under his bicep, cup his tricep, and pull him up toward you
4. Grip your own gi while you step low over your opp
5. Pull down on the opp’s wrist with both hands while squeezing your knee
Next was a choke from knee in the belly:
1. Start with knee in the belly, far hand gripping opp’s collar deep and the near hand gripping opp’s collar low
2. When opp turns away from you, release the deep grip (near hand) and grip beside your far hand grip (which is a bit lower down on the lapel)
3. Swim your forearm underneath opp’s head
4. Pull your lower arm up while pushing your top arm down to complete the choke
Sorry the descriptions aren’t better, but class ended about 9 hours ago and details are tougher to remember
Urso then paired us into groups of three for a partial train from knee in the belly. If the top guy got a submission or improved his position (mount, etc) then he’d stay in on top. If the bottom guy escaped or got to half guard, he’d stay in go to top position. I was going with a blue belt about my size and a white belt with a couple stripes and a few pounds on me. I was very good at escaping knee in the belly (especially to half guard), but I did a poor job of advancing my position on top.
I trained with three folks today. The white and blue belt I just mentioned, as well as a brown belt who’s about my size (and is training with a sprained ankle).
With the white belt, I worked really hard to try to sweep him with a foot on the hip and my other foot behind his knee. While I could launch him in the air a couple of times, I was having difficulty actually sweeping him. Definitely an area I need to work on. He was going 100%, and I was surprised how winded I was after training with him.
Next was the blue belt. I was on defense almost all the time but was able to counter most of what he was doing. I was trying to use the new open half guard pass I just learned but without much success. Of course, I’ll need to keep trying it while training before I’m able to really make it work.
Last was the brown belt – - – with two brief exceptions, I was playing defense most of the time….but I did a decent job of preventing most of his submission attempts.
