On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Steve Nelson, who fought in and ran the Unified Shoot Wrestling Federation (USWF) in the 1990′s in Amarillo, Texas.

Our focus on this show is the debut mixed martial arts card being held Friday, October 24, in Amarillo, of Shark Fight Promotions.

This card, which will take place at the Amarillo National Center on the Tri-State Exposition grounds right near Interstate 40, will also be available on an Internet pay-per-view. Steve will be the lead commentator for this Internet pay-per-view.

Besides the fight card, there will also be a tribute on this show to Amarillo native, the late Evan Tanner. One dollar of every pay-per-view purchase will be donated to the Evan Tanner Scholarship Fund.

In a lengthy interview, we discuss the debut of Shark Fight Promotions in Amarillo, this fight card and which fighters to watch most closely, mixed martial arts and wrestling in Amarillo and Texas, and more.

We also open the show with some comments on the masterful performance of Bernard Hopkins this past Saturday night, Oct. 18, in defeating Kelly Pavlik by a lopsided unanimous decision.

Hi guys,
I’ve just back from Poland after a long weekend at the ADCC european championships. Here is a quick report i’ll fill in more details in class

Fight 1 vs a polish guy,
We circle around a bit both attempt a couple of take downs I drive in and he defended by poking me in the eye. Ref gives me about 30secs to recover so i end up fighting half blind. He takes me down I pull guard and triangle him. Nice

Fight 2 vs Sahmal a Danish guy
We circle I feel he’s a really good wrestler (turns out been wrestling for 10years) he ends up taking me down I sweep him so we end up standing he takes me down again I pull guard and triangle him. To defend he pick me up rampage style and slams me on me head (ouch) I sink the triangle deeper and submit him. When i stand up i’m seeing stars.

Fight 3 vs another polish guy
we circle he takes me down, I sweep end up in side control attack for a leg lock, he ends up in my guard. I set up two gogoplata’s an omaplata he escapes them all so i take his back but don’t secure the hooks (d’oh) i attack for the choke he keeps defending and time runs out. They restart us standing in the middle I pull guard not realising its a negative point. I then throw everything at him evengiving up the mount to set up a leglock he keeps stalling and wins because i jumped guard

All in all I fought well dominated all my opponents and should have been in the finals but you live and learn.

Colored belts and experienced grapplers are urged to register for the ADVANCED divisions but the organizers will not be strict with what skill level you register in, so it is basically your prerogative to select where you want to compete. BASIC, we would hope, is for the NOVICE grapplers and the ADVANCED division is for those who wish to challenge themselves.

For BASIC skill divisions, all chokes, wrist locks (except standing wrist locks), elbow locks and shoulder locks are legal. For ADVANCED skill divisions, all submissions legal in the BASIC skill divisions, plus the addition of straight ankle locks and knee bars only.

Junior divisions for those born 1991 and later: one division, except in the case of an oversized competitor, where we will split into two weight divisions for safety of the smaller players.

For female competitors: one division, except in the case of an oversized competitor, where we will split into two weight divisions for safety of the smaller players.

ENTRY FEES:
For ONE competition (GI or NOGI), the fee will be Php 600 only.
For BOTH competitions, the fee will be a discounted to Php 1000 only.

SPECIAL ENTRY FEES FOR COMPETITORS WHO JOINED THE ROLL-A-PALOOZA:
For ONE competition (GI or NOGI), the fee will be Php 500 only.
For BOTH competitions, the fee will be a discounted to Php 900 only.

Once a competitor has registered for a competition, he/she will be free to join more than one division (just as long as he/she qualifies) with no added charge. Ex: A competitor who was born in 1991 or later can join both the Juniors and Adult division for the same cost.

With out a doubt, one of the most embarrassing things to happen in my short jiu jitsu career. Drove 5hrs, spent about $200 on travel/tournament fees, and I lose my first fucking match. It’s what I deserve for drinking the night before, and still smoking. I’m an idiot. What to work on.

The last one will come with experience, but the first six has to come from getting in the gym and drilling. Also will have to get some road work, strength training, and more road work in my schedule. Running for miles on end might can never hurt building up extra stamina.

Open guard sweep
Position: open guard with grips on his sleeves and foot in hips.

1. Take right foot and hook behind his left leg at the knees
2. Take right hand and grab his ankle while still having the hook behind his knees with your leg.
3. Remove right foot from behind his knees and place it behind his left foot.
4. Left hand should still have a grip on his right sleeve, and left foot should still be in his hip.
5. Pull his left sleeve, push on his hip with left foot, pull on his ankle with right hand, and pull with right leg at his right ankle.
6. SWEEP

Pretty easy eh? Well, I’m still a white belt so I have limited knowledge. Even though I should have tons of experience by now, I took about 4months off. But that’s no excuse. Like I said, it’s time for some serious training. Also, I need to prepare mentally for Grapplers Quest. I only wish I knew how to prepare for it, lol.

I’ve been putting a lot of time into my jiu jitsu, and have forgotten almost completely about school. I don’t study, I procrastinate on my homework, and it’s like just going through the motions when I go to class. Somehow I’m still passing. Amazing.
