On this special edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Jay Larkin, the new president and COO of the International Fight League.

Jay Larkin headed the acclaimed boxing telecasts on Showtime for two decades. He still is involved in boxing and will oversee HBO’s broadcast of the super middleweight title unification fight between Joe Calzaghe and Mikkel Kessler in Cardiff, Wales, this Saturday, November 3. While in Wales, he also will be on the phone to run the first-ever live MMA event on primetime network TV, when the IFL holds its World Grand Prix broadcast live on MyNetworkTV from the Sears Centre near Chicago. Both events will air live at 9 PM ET/8 PM CT.

We spoke with him Monday at his IFL office in New York as he was preparing for both events. We discussed the latest news on the Calzaghe-Kessler fight; the IFL Grand Prix; the major changes that are in store for the IFL’s team concept; and much more.

On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman brings you a series of interviews conducted at the kickoff news conference of the new M-1 Global (http://www.m-1global.com/) mixed martial arts promotion held Monday, October 22, at the
Marc Ecko Enterprises showroom in New York.

The highlight of this event was the appearance by Fedor Emelianenko, the consensus top heavyweight and pound-for-pound fighter in MMA today. He is the first fighter which M-1 Global has announced they have signed. We spoke with both Fedor and his manager, Vadim Finkelchtein, at this event.

We also spoke with another veteran of MMA, Monte Cox. He has been named the president and CEO of M-1 Global. We spoke with him about the current and future plans of when and where M-1 Global plans to run live events, and with which American networks they are presently negotiating. We also spoke about their plans to market Fedor to the American public with Mitchell Maxwell, a Broadway show producer who is now also the chairman of M-1 Global.

At this news conference was veteran MMA fighter and radio and television commentator Frank Trigg of TAGG Radio (http://taggradio.com/). We spoke with him about his initial impressions of M-1 Global. NO HOLDS BARRED: Mo Lawal, Wrestling and the Combat Sports

On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman speaks with freestyle wrestler Mo Lawal (http://www.myspace.com/molawal), a member of the US national team.

Mo Lawal is an athlete who embodies the totality of the combat sports. He resides and trains at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, and is a 2008 Olympic hopeful. He is also an avid boxing fan, has trained in boxing, and is friends with numerous boxers. After his wrestling career is over, he plans to become a professional mixed martial arts fighter.

On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman discusses the recent controversies involving two 44-year-old heavyweight fighters and former world champions: boxer Evander Holyfield and mixed martial arts fighter Randy Couture.

Holyfield just dropped a lopsided unanimous decision to WBO heavyweight champion Sultan Ibragimov in Moscow, Russia, this past Saturday, October 13. Many are now calling for the obvious, for Holyfield, who turns 45 this coming Friday, to retire. But many in the American boxing media were just this past week telling us that Holyfield actually stood a real chance to win in this fight.

Couture announced last week that he was quitting the UFC and vacating his heavyweight title there. His main beefs were that top heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko had just signed with another promotion, M-1 of Russia, and that he was not being compensated fairly and had been told he was the second-highest paid fighter in that company when he had heard directly from other fighters that he was not.

In another no-holds-barred commentary, we discuss what all this says about the sycophantic media which covers both sports, the future of boxing and its beleaguered heavyweight division, and the future of UFC now that it has abruptly lost perhaps its most popular fighter of all time.

This week we explain in depth why it was a wise move by HBO to end negotiations about airing the trashy UFC product, and how their business models are in conflict. We also offer a critique of the elitist nature of HBO’s programming in general, including its boxing series.

Despite some last-minute drama, Saturday’s fight between WBC interim heavyweight champ Samuel Peter and challenger Jameel McCline will take place as scheduled at Madison Square Garden. It will be shown live in the US on Showtime.

The Friday edition of the New York Daily News ran a story quoting an unnamed source alleging that McCline “received more than $12,000 worth of steroids, human growth hormone and related drugs over a 21-month period” from March 2005 to December 2006 (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/more_sports/2007/10/05/2007-10-05_mccline_steps_into_steroid_ring.html).

McCline, however, has not been indicted, arrested, tried, or convicted for any of these charges. Plus, like Sam Peter, he will have to undergo both prefight and postfight doping tests by the New York State Athletic Commission.

Thus, the fight is still on.

On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman previews the next major boxing show at Madison Square Garden in New York, which takes place this Saturday, October 6.

This card is headlined by the first title defense by the newly-crowned WBC interim heavyweight champion, Samuel Peter (28-1, 22 KOs), who faces challenger Jameel McCline (38-7-3, 23 KOs). This fight will be shown live in the US on Showtime.

Peter hopes to use this fight as a showcase for his claim that he is the best heavyweight boxer in the world. McCline, a late replacement for regular WBC champ Oleg Maskaev, who pulled out claiming a back injury, hopes to derail these plans and pull an upset.

At the prefight news conference at the Garden Wednesday, we spoke with both principals, Samuel Peter and Jameel McCline. We also spoke with heavyweight Kevin McBride (34-5-1, 29 KOs), who fights the unpredictable Andrew Golota (39-6-1, 32 KOs) on this card, and McBride’s new trainer, Buddy McGirt.

We spoke with Dino Duva, Peter’s promoter, to clarify the history of why and how his fighter was named the WBC interim champion. We also discuss their plans for Sam Peter to try to unify the various heavyweight titles. We also spoke with veteran boxing official Joe Dwyer, now a member of the Board of Governors of the WBC, to explain that body’s actions in this situation.

And we spoke with promoter Don King, who co-promotes Peter, and Ken Hershman, senior vice president and general manager, sports and event programming at Showtime.
