"It’s all about mat time." When I was a white belt, I was always working on
passing the guard, my side control, defending the guard pass, and in general how
to hold down bigger guys. I have always focused on control first: position
before submission. Get in here and train as often as you can, and you will get
results.

Here’s a quote from a recent interview with Marcelo Garcia:

Q: "Give us some recommendations on how to improve in Jiu-Jitsu."

Marcelo: "I can tell you the things that I did when I was a blue belt, or a
white belt. I spend the most time that I had in the school. I would think
twenty-four hours a day about Jiu-Jitsu. Since I was a white belt I felt like I
wanted to do this with my life. And I hope I do this forever. But don’t try to
find different stuff. Don’t try too much to find secrets.

Spend all of
your time doing Jiu-Jitsu."

On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman makes a public but personal appeal to MMA and Jiu-Jitsu legend Royce Gracie, who fought on the June 2 K-1 Dynamite card in Los Angeles and tested positive for steroid use: Come clean, Royce Gracie.

Here is the full statement regarding Royce Gracie issued Monday, June 18, 2007, by the California State Athletic Commission:

For immediate release:

As a result of the various inquiries that we have received, the California State Athletic Commission contacted the laboratory that performed the testing on Mr. Royce Gracie’s anabolic agent/masking agent sample and obtained detailed information regarding the test.

A normal person could have a level of 2 ng/mL of Nandrolone that the human body could potentially produce and an athlete that has just completed rigorous physical exercise could have a level of 6 ng/mL.

We received a written response from the laboratory’s Director of Science and Technology confirming the positive “A” sample and positive “B” sample.

Both samples provided by Mr. Gracie had a level of over 50 ng/mL and we were informed that the level itself was so elevated that it would not register on the laboratory’s calibrator.

On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Dr. Margaret Goodman, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Dr. Goodman, a neurologist who is also the former chief ringside physician for the Nevada commission, has just written an article entitled “What Happened to Doing Our Homework?” (http://www.secondsout.com/USA/news.cfm?ccs=229&cs=22163) for the boxing web site SecondsOut.com (for which I also produce SecondsOut Radio, at http://www.secondsout.com/radio/). The article begins to address the controversy surrounding former heavyweight boxing contender Tommy Morrison, who has claimed that his positive test for the HIV virus conducted for the Nevada commission in 1996 was inaccurate.

After an almost 11-year hiatus, Morrison returned to the boxing ring Feb. 22. 2007, in Chester, West Virginia, in a bout sanctioned by that state’s athletic commission. He also fought in a fight billed as a “mixed martial arts” bout, although it was not held under MMA rules, this past Saturday, June 9, at the Yavapai-Apache Nation’s Cliff Castle Casino in Camp Verde, Arizona. In numerous published reports, Morrison’s former agent, Randy Lang, has alleged that recent tests have again confirmed that Morrison is HIV-positive (http://www.azcentral.com/sports/columns/articles/0610boxinginsider0611.html). Morrison has disputed that charge, although he has not made public any tests to refute Lang.

In a lengthy discussion, Dr. Goodman addresses what we really know about the Morrison situation, and whether someone today can go from being HIV-positive to negative. On this special edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman previews the fight this Saturday night, June 9, between undefeated WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (29-0, 24 KOs) and the former unified welterweight champion, Zab Judah (34-4, 25 KOs). This will be the main event at New York’s Madison Square Garden and will take place one day before the annual Puerto Rican Day Parade, and one day after the annual awards dinner of the Boxing Writers Association of America, both of which will also be in New York.

We spoke with the defending champion, Miguel Cotto, on a media teleconference call.

We spoke with Zab Judah at the prefight news conference this Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.

We also spoke with promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank, which is the lead promoter for this event, both about this fight and his views on the state of boxing and UFC.

USA Wrestling will be holding the 2007 United States Marine Corps U.S. World Team Trials (http://www.usawrestlinglasvegas.com/) this coming weekend, Saturday, June 9, and Sunday, June 10, at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Besides competition in men’s freestyle, men’s Greco-Roman, and women’s freestyle wrestling, this will be the first World Team Trials to feature competition in grappling, where wrestlers can win by points or submissions.

The 2007 World Team Trials will determine the 2007 U.S. World Team that will compete in men’s freestyle, men’s Greco-Roman, and women’s freestyle wrestling at the 2007 World Wrestling Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, Sept. 17-23, and in grappling at the 2007 World Wrestling Games in Antalya, Turkey, Sept. 7-9.

We spoke with Rich Bender about the 2007 World Team Trials. We also discussed USA Wrestling’s recent announcement of the formation of “a strategic partnership” with the International Fight League (IFL) and what that means.
